In July 14,2022, an Australian study showed that consumption of bak kut teh and western medicine can lead to liver failure, causing heated discussions among netizens. However, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe that the research does not list which ingredients of Bak Kut Teh are in conflict with Western medicine, so the results of the research are difficult to be accurate.
The president of the Malaysian Chinese Medical Association, Wen Yejing, pointed out that the ingredients and prescriptions of each bak kut teh packet are different. Therefore, the relevant reports and research results cannot be generalized.
"According to reports, we don't know which ingredient of the prescription causes liver failure, and the ingredients of the prescription must be listed one by one, otherwise it cannot be ruled out which drug is at fault. For this reason, Traditional Chinese medicine cannot draw conclusions based on reports alone. "
Regarding the circumstances under which people eat bak kut teh and take western medicine at the same time, he said that some people with diabetes, high blood pressure or cholesterol will take western medicine for a long time, so it is difficult to judge that they will harm the liver if they eat bak kut teh at the same time.
"For a long time, there have been no reports of liver damage caused by eating meat and bones and taking western medicine. Doctors also recommend that patients with three highs eat less meat, so it is impossible to determine whether patients who eat both at the same time will damage the liver."
He says that if patients are concerned about their own safety, they can also refer to relevant studies not to eat bak kut teh and western medicine at the same time.
