Klang will have its inaugural car-free day this Sunday.

Set to be held every third Sunday of the month, the event will feature various recreational, arts and cultural activities.

A 2.4km stretch from Jalan Stesen to Jalan Istana will be closed to vehicles from 7am to 9.30am for the purpose.

Klang Municipal Council (MPK) president Noraini Roslan said people would be able to enjoy leisure walks on the road and focus on having fun with their family.

“Our aim is to give walkers, joggers, skateboarders, rollerbladers and cyclists a chance to use both the roads freely.

“We will hold various activities where buskers can perform while vendors sell their wares,” she said.

Noraini said the event was an effective way to promote public health, local economic progress and social cohesion among the various communities.

“The council is aligned to the nation’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions as part of a global drive to protect the environment and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

“It also aims to support healthy living as we are moving towards an ageing society,” she said.

Noraini believes there will be a spillover effect when the crowd moves on to shop after the event.

MPK Corporate Communications Department director Norfiza Mahfiz said the council would hold a children’s colouring contest to liven up the atmosphere.

The council encouraged families to hold picnics at the MPK Pocket Park (opposite Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery) and had invited vendors to sell handicraft at the Safari Art Mural alley, she said.

“MPK will organise a Zumba session, an exhibition by the National Anti-Drug Agency and Walk for Life, which is a 2km walk around the town’s heritage area,” she added.

The entry points into Jalan Stesen and Jalan Istana that will be closed for the event are Jalan Tengku Diauddin from the Musaeddin Bridge, Jalan Istana from the Kampung Jawa direction, Bulatan Simpang Lima to Jalan Istana, Lorong Tingkat 1 and Lorong Tingkat 2, Lorong Pegawai and the alleys leading into Jalan Tengku Diauddin.

“We will implement a contra-flow for traffic at Lintang Dato Hamzah, which is a one-way street,” said Norfiza.
