In line with the completion of the 19th LRT station of the LRT 3 line during September this year, the Klang City Council (MPK) will soon carry out a major overhaul of Pasar Besar Klang located at Meru. Their key focus is to improve traffic, parking regulations and also imposing parking charges in order to provide residents with a better and more comfortable shopping and traffic experience.
The Klang City Council convened a multi-participation meeting on Friday, focusing on solving the five key issues in the market, namely improving the traffic flow around the market, parking spaces and parking fees, and following up on the buildings of Block C and Block D of the market. They also discussed regarding the construction progress, solving the problem of flooding of foreign workers in the market, discussing the basic facilities and maintenance plans of the market, as well as garbage disposal and road maintenance work, etc.
Participants in the meeting included Klang City Council Deputy Chairman and Secretary Ms. Elya, Licensing Team Director Y.Bhg. Datin Fadzilah, Engineering Team Director and district councillor Mr. Low Kwee Sia, Bandar Baru Klang Police Commissioner Mr. Amirul, and other important members from the Immigration Department, LRT3 contractor, Wisma KCCCI (Klang Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry) and more.
Mr. Low had stated that according to the current progress report, the construction of Block C and Block D is now at 27% and is estimated to be completed by 31 May 2022. Once completed, hawkers operating at the current temporary location will move to the new building, which will have 120 stalls in Block C and 20 stalls in Block D (non-Halal food).
"Once the temporary location has been vacated, it will be repurposed alongside the current existing car park to increase the number of market parking spaces from 100 to nearly 300, so as to meet the needs of the 19th LRT station once it starts to operate."
He said that there is currently no charging system for parking spaces at the market. Once the LRT is launched, it is believed that the 19th station in the main market will become very popular, as commuters will be parking there to take the LRT.
"In order to avoid overcrowding and inconvenience to shoppers, we have agreed to implement parking charges to encourage everyone to car pool or take the bus in order to reduce the amount of vehicles while promoting the reduction of carbon emissions."
The parking lot will be paved with high-quality asphalt, and at the same time, the revenue of the city council will be increased through the parking fee system that will help with future maintenance and repair of road sections.
Mr. Low Kwee Sia said that the traffic flow in the main market has always been high with the frequent entry and exit of cargo trucks, so the city council had asked the LRT3 contractor to use high-quality asphalt to resurface the road section so that it can withstand the weight of these trucks.
"We also hope that by charging parking fees, people will be encouraged to use public transport more, such as taking the Selangor Smart Bus to the main road, and the parking fees collected can also be used for future maintenance costs."
