Around 90 confirmed cases of dengue are being reported weekly in Klang since the start of 2022.

As of 23 January, Klang has recorded a total of 271 cases of dengue with no fatalities.

The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) Health Department director Azmi Muji said in the corresponding three weeks last year, there were 153 dengue cases.

“The hot weather with intermittent rain has led to an increase in the Aedes mosquitoes.

“The higher numbers may also be due to the fact that more people are out and about now compared to last year during the movement control order (MCO).”

Of the 11 constituencies in the Klang district, Sentosa had 53 cases, Sementa 40 cases and Port Klang 33 cases.

“Our department’s environmental health inspectors are conducting checks in housing, commercial and industrial areas to eradicate mosquito breeding habitats,” said Azmi. He said health inspectors also monitored the spraying of insecticide to control the adult mosquito population.

“Of late, we are finding mosquito larvae in plastic and paper cups discarded near night markets.

“We urge people to dispose of their rubbish responsibly,” he added.

Azmi said the dengue virus remained a serious public health threat.

“People should spend 10 minutes a week on checking their house and surroundings to ensure they do not become Aedes breeding sites,” he said.

Selangor public health, unity, women and family committee chairman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud urged people to not be complacent.

“Continue taking precautions and ensure stagnant water does not collect in empty containers,” she said.

Up to 23 January, Selangor recorded 1,374 dengue cases compared to 1,173 in the same period last year.

Petaling district had the highest number of cases at 432, followed by Hulu Langat (392) and Klang (271).

Common symptoms of dengue fever include headache, body ache, fatigue, vomiting, sore throat and skin rash.
