Family reunion dinners will be allowed on Chinese New Year’s eve on 31 January 2022 (Monday), says the National Unity Ministry (Kementerian Perpaduan Negara). The maximum amount of people attending the dinner was not stated.
Open houses will not be allowed throughout the celebration.
National Unity Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, who announced the SOPs for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations, said prayers on the first and second days of the Lunar New Year on 1-2 February will be allowed, with SOPs under Phase Four the National Recovery Plan in place.
Special prayers of the Hokkien tradition, which falls on 8-9 February, as well as prayers for Chap Goh Mei on 15 February are allowed.
“While open houses cannot be held, Chinese New Year receptions can be held but by invitation only.
“The reception cannot be held in multiple sessions and is not open to the public,” she said at a press conference on Wednesday (19 January).
Halimah said basic SOP must be followed such as ensuring guests register their attendance via MySejahtera, temperature checks and to ensure attendees are fully vaccinated.
Lion, dragon and tiger dances can be performed and are subject to creative industry SOPs.
Meanwhile, Dr Wee said the SOP announcement is good news to the Chinese community.
“While we can enjoy the celebration, it is important that we continue to adhere to the SOP for the safety and health of everyone,” said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
