Pasar Besar Meru and three other major wet markets will be closed on selected days until 30 December to facilitate cleaning and disinfection.
Klang Municipal Council (MPK) president Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin said the work would be coordinated by the council's wet market unit.
“Our wet markets must be washed and disinfected regularly as it has a large number of customers and traders daily.
“Pasar Besar Meru, which has a wholesale market and daily market, and other such facilities under MPK’s purview, namely the Kapar, Port Klang and Pandamaran wet markets, will also be disinfected,” he said at the council’s full board meeting.
Ahmad Fadzli said the measures were part of efforts to make public markets safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
He added that daily cleaning and sanitisation would be carried out according to Health Ministry requirements.
Ahmad Fadzli advised traders and their workers to always wear their face masks properly, adding that enforcement officers would continue to ensure that physical distancing was adhered to at all wet markets.
If markets were to close for an extended period, he said it would have a significant economic impact.
