In spite of the lockdown imposed due to the escalating number of Covid-19 cases in the country, life for some in Klang has not changed much.
On the first day of the lockdown on Tuesday (June 1), many were seen going about their daily activities such as gathering at parks and socializing.
Many were also seen exercising, some individually and some in groups, at the park next to the Padang Sultan Sulaiman Stadium as well as at the Pandamaran Sports Complex park.
At the Pandamaran park, a group of five men were seen seated close together without their face masks while chatting away.
When contacted, South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Shamsul Amar Ramli said everyone must abide by the operating procedures (SOP) of the movement control order.
“We will be patrolling the areas and anyone caught breaching the SOPs can be issued a compound notice, ’’ he added.
The respective police forces of both north and south Klang areas have also set up multiple road blocks to further enforce the resident's adherence to the lockdown imposed by the government. Road blocks have been set up on the three main bridges in Klang, and on several other roads - including Plaza Tol Bukit Raja (from Klang to Shah Alam) and BT13 Jalan Kapar (from Kuala Selangor to Klang).
Klang district officer Mohd Zainal Mohd Nor urged residents to strictly adhere to the SOPs set by the National Security Council.
“Those going to the park can exercise according to what is allowed and must go home as soon as they have completed their exercise routine without stopping to socialise.
“This is crucial to break the chain of infection. Stay home and stay healthy,’’ said Mohd Zainal.
Klang Municipal Council deputy enforcement director Shahrul Hazri Abd Majid said his team will be patrolling all public parks to prevent people from violating the lockdown SOPs.
“We can issue them a compound notice for this violation as well as for not observing social distancing, ’’ he added.
Shahrul Hazri urged Klang residents to do their part by staying home and if there was a need to go out, they must strictly abide by the stipulated regulations.
“Take care of yourself and take care of others as well, ’’ he added.
Meanwhile, Klang MP Charles Santiago said people must be self-disciplined and should not blame anyone else if they end up getting infected due to their own conduct.
“They must understand that the spread of the virus is no longer caused by factory workers but by neighbours who exercise, socialize and eat together.
“The infection currently is passing from friends, neighbours and colleagues, ’’ said Santiago.
He said members of the public must not complicate matters by not adhering to the lockdown SOPs given there are insufficient beds at the intensive care units to care for critical cases due to the high rate of infection.
Santiago said the purpose of the lockdown, which is to curb the chain of infection, would be defeated if people do not adhere to the SOPs.
