It has been more than a year since the COVID-19 pandemic has started, and Klang district alone has recorded a total of 76 clusters to date.
Earlier clusters were mainly industrial clusters, but Klang is now facing community, religious and educational clusters all at once, causing the numbers to rise dramatically. As of the clusters recorded, 20 of these clusters are still 'active' clusters.
Klang councellor Lee Fu Haw had stated that the infection chain of the previous clusters had not been severed, and now new local clusters have sprouted. Last Friday, another cluster involving Klang was added - the Kota Raja Cluster, which is a cluster that stemmed from religious activites. This cluster involved a religious centre at Kampung Jawa, Jalan Kota Raja. A total of 68 people have been tested with 37 who tested positive, resulting in a 54% COVID-positive rate.
Apart from this cluster, another cluster found on 28th of April 2021 - the Leboh Gambus Cluster, recorded a total of 86 positive cases. As of now, Klang councellor Lee Fu Haw said that Klang district has accumulated a total of 7 clusters related to religious activities.
Earlier in the year, one of the largest clusters in Malaysia - the Teratai Cluster that involved Top Glove and it's dorms was also situated in Klang, with a record of 6807 positive cases. Luckily, this cluster has ended on the 17th of April. Other notable large clusters in Klang include the Sungai Putus Cluster, with 3560 confirmed cases, and the Perigi Cluster, with 1153 confirmed cases.
"Before, the positive cases mainly involved immigrant workers, but that isn't the case now. There has been a massive increase in local residents testing positive for COVID-19," he said.
As of 21st May 2021, Klang has accumulated 96 deaths, 85% of the victims are above the age of 45.
What makes matters worst, is that KKM has also found cases that involve variants of concerns (VOC) in Klang. This includes a total of 11 cases - 9 of them are Indian VOCs, one is the African VOC, and the last one the Russian VOC. These variants pose an even greater threat to the community due to their higher infection rates due to their asymptomatic nature.
#KitaJagaKita. Please stay safe, fellow people of Klang. Let's hang in there for a little longer. As always, we urge our fellow community to register for the vaccines and follow the standard operating procedures that are set so we can end this pandemic as soon as we can.
