Hawkers and stall owners at Klang markets were criticized for not being self-disciplined. Even after contact with a boss or employee that was tested positive for COVID-19, close contacts did not quaratine or isolate themselves according to the instructions given. They continue to set up their stalls to do business at local pasars as if nothing had happened, and hence arousing the fear of a morning/night market cluster.
Unlike earlier versions of the Movement Control Order (MCO), the current third version allows the morning and night markets to operate as per usual. However, the local vendors revealed that prevention measures that were set in place were lackluster, and the lack of initiative could potentially cause another string of community infections.
Klang councellor Lee Fu Haw disclosed that during a meeting of the Licensing Subcommittee of the City Council (MPK) a few days ago, some members had revealed that stalls continued to operate even after one of their employees had tested positive for the coronavirus, and the others also took no initiative to self-isolate. For example, the owner of the stall has tested positive, but the employees of the stall continues to set up and do business regardless of their exposure to the virus.
"These hawkers have no awareness in preventing the further spread of COVID-19, their minds only set on making an income without a hint of concern towards the community's wellbeing. Their selfishness may even drag down their peers and cause entire morning/night markets to be instructed to close if a cluster were to happen."
"The City Council (MPK) will take the recent lack of awareness and prevention among morning and night market vendors and customers into serious consideration."
He pointed out that the city council does not intend to cut off the opportunities for others to earn a living, but it will never tolerate the lack of discipline towards the standard operating procedures (SOPs) previously set in place by the government. Therefore, it will instruct the law enforcement team, the health team and the licensing team to cooperate and supervise in the near future.
